Ilinca Serbanescu, PhD, MSc

I have always been fascinated by the human mind, and by what becomes possible when people truly feel supported, understood, and empowered.

The path into psychology gave direction to both my passion and my sense of purpose.

Moving to Germany as a child and growing up in a performance-driven culture shaped my early curiosity about what helps humans not just cope, but truly thrive under pressure and change. That experience still informs how I see human potential today. I now support individuals, teams, and organizations in transforming adversity into growth and building lasting resilience from within.

I hold a BSc in Psychology from the Free University of Berlin and a MSc in Psychology from the University of Düsseldorf. Driven by a growing curiosity about how we can better understand and support people as individuals, I went on to pursue a PhD at the University of Heidelberg, which I completed in 2023. My doctoral research focused on personalised treatment approaches for chronic depression, guided by the question of “what works for whom and why?”.

During my time in academia, I authored more than 15 peer-reviewed publications and attended over 100 global conferences, contributing to the growing field of personalised mental health care and advocating for a more human-centred approach to both research and clinical practice. While my career path has evolved beyond academia, the values of scientific rigor, personalised support, and evidence-based thinking remain central to my work.

My work has also expanded into neuroeconomics as a research affiliate at the Center for Economics and Neuroscience, where I explored the link between brain processes and economic decision-making, and advised organizations and governments on consumer behavior, neuromarketing, and neuroleadership.

Alongside this, I led international mental health promotion initiatives in more than 20 countries as the CEO and International Coordinator of the European Alliance Against Depression, and contributed to several EU-funded projects advancing mental health across Europe, including MENTUPP, a pioneering program focused on workplace mental health.

I further served as the New Business Lead for the DACH region at Minddistrict, working at the intersection of digital mental health innovation, healthcare systems, and corporate leadership. Across these roles, my work has consistently connected science, strategy, and real-world application to drive meaningful change.

Entrepreneur with purpose. Scientist by training. Visionary empath at heart.

How Workplace Mental Health became my focus

The move into my current work focus came quite naturally over time. During the pandemic, I began receiving increasing requests from various companies to speak about mental health and well-being at work. What started as occasional talks gradually developed into a clearer focus area, and eventually into the decision to dedicate myself fully to this field.

Today, this is the core of my work: supporting organisations in building healthier, more human-centred ways of working. Alongside my scientific background, I completed a two-year coaching training certified by the European Association for Supervision and Coaching (EASC), which enables me to translate evidence-based insights into practical, human, and action-oriented approaches for leaders, teams, and organisations.

Born in Romania, with over 25 years spent in Germany, now based in the beautiful region of Lisbon, Portugal, I bring a strong intercultural perspective to my work. I deeply enjoy working with clients and organisations across the world, and feel genuinely grateful for the diversity of people, cultures, and contexts I get to engage with.

The times we are facing increasingly call for workplaces that not only rely on people’s capacity to work, but also actively sustain their well-being and serve as a bridge of support when it is needed. My vision is to help bring accessible mental health care through workplaces to more countries in the future, including developing countries, reaching marginalised groups and younger people.

To co-create a world that moves beyond mental burden toward one grounded in health, empathy, and awareness.
